Through precise measurement techniques, structured processing of geospatial information, and targeted visual presentation, geodesists describe our surroundings, classify them according to relevant characteristics, and contribute their expertise to shaping and managing change in a sustainable way. Students gain hands‑on experience with classical measurement instruments such as theodolites, laser scanners, and cameras, while also working with modern information systems, satellite technologies, and digital remote sensing sensors. An important focus of the programme is the development and application of automated, computer‑aided methods for acquiring, processing, analysing, and visualising spatial data. The field of Geodesy and Earth Observation is broad and diverse, covering applications ranging from satellite‑based global Earth measurements and air‑borne regional terrain surveys to terrestrial, locally focused engineering surveys of buildings, infrastructure, and machines. In addition, geodetic measurement methods play a key role in disaster response, environmental monitoring, risk assessment, and Earth system research. The Bachelor’s programme provides a strong scientific and technical foundation and prepares students for advanced studies or entry into a wide range of professional fields related to geospatial data and Earth observation. Education in geodesy therefore plays an important role in society. The use of digital technologies and modern analysis strategies is an integral part of the Bachelor's programme in Geodesy and Earth Observation and provides an integrated, comprehensive foundation in the entire field.
The standard period of study for the Bachelor's programme in Geodesy and Earth Observation (GEObs) is six semesters (180 ECTS), with studies beginning in the winter semester. The credit load for each semester is 30 ECTS, with no more than six exams to be taken per semester. The programme comprises five categories of modules: basic and orientation exams (GOPs), GEObs core modules, GEObs elective modules, free elective modules, and a Bachelor's thesis. GOPs, GEObs core modules, and the Bachelor's thesis are compulsory, while GEObs electives and free electives can be freely chosen from a catalogue of electives provided. Study Structure & Content The basic and orientation exams (GOPs) must be successfully passed within the first two semesters. In semesters one to four, there are 18 core GEObs modules to be completed. They define the fundamentals of all disciplines of geodesy and Earth observation, from modern engineering geodesy to photogrammetry, remote sensing from the ground, air, and space, satellite geodesy, Earth surveying and modelling, cartography, and geoinformatics to land management. They build on each other to some extent, starting with the basics, which are expanded upon with more in-depth knowledge and advanced methodological approaches. The content is then further deepened in the GEObs electives, which allow students to focus on individual topics, methods, and skills. GEObs elective modules can be chosen in semesters four to six. The elective areas give students the opportunity to orient themselves in a specific direction in order to prepare for a Master's degree in their individual field of interest or to pursue a professional profile in a specific subject area. The list of GEObs elective modules includes various modules offered in the summer and winter semesters. Students must select at least 10 of these modules.
