Electrical Systems Engineering (ESE) is a thrilling multidisciplinary research field that combines methods of electrical engineering, information technology, computer engineering, and applied mathematics for the design of entire electrical systems. The Master's programme in Electrical System Engineering (MS ESE) is a two-year, full-time programme. It offers two specialisations: Signal & Information Processing concentrates more on the computational aspects of a system's behaviour, while Electronics & Devices focuses on IC design on the micro- or nano-scale and on aspects of hardware implementation. The innovative, well-structured course programme, excellent equipment, small groups, and intensive interaction between students and staff members ensure successful graduation. Our department regularly receives top rankings in Germany. The close cooperation of the department with a number of industrial partners guarantees practically-oriented lectures and provides students with opportunities to make contact with prospective future employers. Additionally, the research strength allows students to obtain the fundamental background necessary for a subsequent PhD. We provide a stimulating atmosphere in an international and interdisciplinary study environment.

MS ESE is divided into four semesters, including three course semesters, and a six-month Master's thesis. The programme is organised in modules, with an overall workload of 120 ECTS credit points. Besides courses on general aspects of system engineering, the students choose courses in the area of their specialisation. A main element of the Master's programme is the student project group. In the project groups, teams of about six to 12 students join one of the research groups within the department and work together for one year on a research-related project. The final part of the programme is the preparation and writing of the Master's thesis, which usually takes place during the last semester. International (non-German speaking) students are required to take a German language course as part of their general studies. The majority of the courses are taught by the department's full professors. Furthermore, renowned international professors come to Paderborn to give guest lectures on advanced topics from the field of systems engineering within the MS ESE programme. Additionally, practically-oriented advanced topics courses are offered by lecturers from companies. The Master's programme is taught entirely in English. Therefore, anyone who is eligible to enrol at a German university and applies for our Master's programme must prove their English language skills with a certified language test.
