Canada provides high-quality education.
A general path most students follow. Exact timing varies by university, program, and intake, so confirm specific deadlines with your shortlisted universities.
Academic year starts: September
Admission intakes: Fall (September), Winter (January), Summer (May)
Varies by province; typically a 4.0 or 4.33 scale, or 0-100 percentage scale where 50% is passing.
Most students open a GIC account from India via Scotiabank or ICICI Bank Canada before arrival, then activate it in person.
Canada changed substantially after 2024, and old advice is now actively wrong. The study permit costs CAD 150 plus CAD 85 for biometrics. Proof of funds is CAD 23,448 for a single applicant for one year of living costs, separate from tuition and travel, effective 1 September 2026 — more than double the old CAD 10,000 figure and checked strictly. The Student Direct Stream, the fast-track route Indian students used, was permanently discontinued on 8 November 2024. Everyone now applies through the regular stream, currently around five weeks for applications from India. Most applicants also need a Provincial Attestation Letter from the province before applying; since 1 January 2026 master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt, but undergraduate and most college applicants still need one. Canada is also capping study permits at 408,000 for 2026, down 7% on 2025. Off-campus work is 24 hours a week during term, raised from 20 on 8 November 2024, and full-time during scheduled breaks. For the post-graduation work permit, a language test has been mandatory since 1 November 2024 — CLB 7 for degree holders, CLB 5 for college graduates. Degree graduates can study any field; college and non-degree graduates must have studied a field on IRCC's eligible list.
From a Designated Learning Institution. A DLI number is required on the application — an offer from a non-designated school cannot support a study permit.
Required for most applicants. Master's and doctoral students at public institutions have been exempt since 1 January 2026.
CAD 23,448 for one applicant for one year of living costs, plus tuition and travel, from 1 September 2026.
Required for Indian applicants studying more than six months. Use a panel physician approved by IRCC.
CAD 150 study permit fee plus CAD 85 biometrics.
Fingerprints and photograph at a visa application centre, within 30 days of the request letter.
About five weeks from India. There is no longer a fast-track option — the Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024.
You receive a port of entry letter of introduction, not the permit itself. The study permit is issued by the border officer on arrival.
What a student going to Canada is generally asked for, from official immigration and university sources. Confirm the exact list with your university and visa office — rules change, and some items depend on your age, course length or subject.
Programme must be at least 8 months at a Designated Learning Institution, and at least 50% completed in Canada. Apply within 180 days of written confirmation of completion. Since 1 November 2024 a language test is mandatory: CLB 7 for university degree holders, CLB 5 for college and polytechnic graduates. Bachelor's, master's and PhD graduates face no field-of-study restriction; college and non-degree graduates must have studied an eligible field on IRCC's published list. No job offer required.
